A recipe to make you love tofu | crispy tofu with a ginger tahini sauce

This is the recipe that will make you enjoy tofu! I recently did a bit of market research on my Instagram stories, asking people why they don’t like tofu but wish they did, and the most common response was ‘texture!’. Rubberiness, sponginess and softness were to be avoided, so this is the recipe I’m giving you to get you on board with tofu. Crispy tofu is easy to achieve with a bit of cornstarch and I love it, especially with a satay sauce. For something a little bit different, I’ve gone with a ginger tahini sauce here and it’s delicious! Almond butter or peanut butter would work well, too. Enjoy!

Tahini sauce:

2tbsp tahini

1 1/2tbsp light soy sauce

1/2tbsp maple syrup or honey

1/2 garlic clove grated

However much ginger you like (to taste)

2tbsp water

Crispy tofu:

1 block firm

2tbsp neutral or olive oil

2tbsp cornstarch

Toppings:

Chilli oil (store bought or homemade)

Spring/green onions sliced finely

Method:

Whisk the ingredients together for the tahini sauce and set aside.

Cut the tofu into approx 1/2inch thickness and then cut each slice into triangles.

Place the cornstarch into a bowl and dip each tofu triangle individually into the cornstarch on both sides and set aside.

Heat the oil in a frying pan to medium heat.

Add the tofu triangles gently and fry until golden and crisp (around 3-4 minutes) on each side.

Remove from the pan and place onto a plate or tray lined with paper towel to drain the excess oil. While hot, season with salt (doing this while the tofu is hot will ensure that the salt sticks to the still hot oil).

Plate up the crispy tofu on a base of some of the tahini sauce and drizzle over some more of it. Top with chilli oil and spring onions and serve with rice and greens dressed in light soy sauce.
